Interview with Nogah, Progressive Death Metal Band from Costa Rica

Nogah is Progressive Death Metal Band from Costa Rica. They’re José Campos, Rolando Duarte, Jason Quesada, Camilo Espinoza, and Jonathan Badilla. Nogah gave us some information. Check it out.

Tell us about Nogah?

Nogah is a late era prog metal band with a death metal influence, we are from Costa Rica. The band is composed of members with similar ideals, we decided to get together and create a project that has a common goal. Our musical influences are very similar and this has allowed us to develop our own sound.

What are lyrical themes of Mogah?

The lyrics have evolved and varied according to how we have developed our sound. Some lyrics narrate the story of people who achieved important things in life, some talk about important events in history and about our philosophy of life.  It is important to mention that the meaning of our name derives from the Hebrew word used to describe the shining light people see when they are about to die, so we use this theme as the main influence for our lyrics and compositions. 

What are your influences?

Our influences are varied, we like classic prog rock, prog metal, jazz and all genres of metal, so we like to compose music that is versatile, where the high and energetic moments and the low moments have a chance to breath and expand in the song, making it very dynamic, always using diverse metrics and time measures. 

How did you choose the cover artwork?

We took into account the meaning of our band’s name. The images make you aware of how every living thing has a limited time span, everything that has a beginning has an end, what once had life will die and travel to Nogah, so this cycle is what we want everyone to see with the artwork.

How were the songs written?

Both guitarists are also in charge of vocals, they have implemented their way of playing using our influences to create the lyrics. It’s never easy to incorporate all the ideas that you want to express in the lyrics of just one song, so if something is hard to say in words we will say it with music, this is how we manage to express what we want in our songs. 

How did the recording process go?

It was fun but not easy, our demo (Nogah) was not created professionally in a studio, it was created at our drummers house using a computer and recording software, all the mixing and mastering was done by our keyboard player and one of the guitarists. Everyone worked hard late at night in some occasions. We feel that we have managed to let the world hear what we want to express with our music. 

What are your future plan?

Our plan for the future is to record our first LP and to consolidate ourselves as an important band in the Costa Rican musical scene, and then the world scene.

Are there any countries you’re interested in touring or performing in? Why?

We are interested in visiting any country, of course the U.S and Europe are a very important stage if you want to be heard around the world.  

What bands would you like to play alongside?

Opeth is one of our biggest influences, without a doubt this would be the band that we would love to play with, but playing with any other renown band that we can identify with would also be great.
